Symphony of the Americas hosts Wines of the World Nov. 14

ksSymphonyoftheAmericas_WinesoftheWorld_Media_2014-24Wines of the World, a tasting event and dinner benefiting Symphony of the Americas, is set this year for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14 at Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale.
The evening includes a wine tasting with dozens of vintages, passed appetizers, and hors d’oeuvre competition among culinary students from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, a silent auction, a multi-course dinner showcasing the talents of several of South Florida’s top chefs, and a live auction with dozens of vintages worth thousands of dollars on the block.
This year’s chef honoree is Marco Vico of Café Vico, a restaurant serving traditional Italian fare. Joining Chef Vico to provide a gourmet feast will be chefs Angelo Elia, Casa D’Angelo; Oliver Saucy, Café Maxx; Per Jacobsen and Courtney Burks, Vienna Café & Wine Bar; Gregory McGowan, Pier 66; Leone Padula, Gran Forno Italian Bakery; Toni Lampasone, Wine Watch Catering; and Bill Mitchell, Publix Aprons Cooking School.
ksSymphonyoftheAmericas_WinesoftheWorld_Media_2014-1Also being honored is the Darioush Winery in Napa, noted for its Bordeaux-style estate wines, and wine and arts educator Lyn Farmer, who will serve as master of ceremonies. “This is one of the only wine events not run by a wine company,” he says. “This one is run by an arts group that knows wine and music go together.”
Farmer says he admires the varied work that SOA does both locally and in other parts of the world, not only by creating music, but also by educating listeners about history and context. “They go the extra mile and provide an added dimension,” he says.
One of the more unusual aspects of WOW is that guests are encouraged to bring wines from their own cellars to share at their tables. The event, now in its 19th year, appeals to serious collectors who come to bid on the fine wines and rare vintages offered at auction, as well as novices who are just learning.
As it did last year, the Fort Lauderdale Chapter of the Chaine des Rotisseurs, an international food and wine group, will participate in the evening.
A kickoff event will be held during October at the New River Fine Art Gallery, where works by some of Fort Lauderdale’s artists will be unveiled, all focusing on the theme of wine, food and music.
