Yankees Come to Town Thursday Night
The New York Yankees visit Rate Field Thursday night, and honestly, this feels like one of those games where we might actually have a puncher’s chance. Yeah, they’re 73-60 and we’re 48-85, but Davis Martin has been solid for us lately, and sometimes you catch a team at the right time.
Game Info
When: Thursday, August 28, 2025 at 7:40 p.m. ET
Where: Rate Field, Chicago
TV: CHSN, YES
Pitchers: Will Warren (7-6, 4.47 ERA) vs Davis Martin (5-9, 3.93 ERA)
Why We Might Not Get Blown Out
Davis Martin gets the ball for us, and he’s been one of our more reliable starters with a 3.93 ERA. Sure, he’s 5-9, but that record says more about our offense than his pitching. When Martin’s on, he can keep us in games.
The Yankees are sending Will Warren to the mound. He’s 7-6 but has a 4.47 ERA, so our hitters should get some chances if they stay patient. Warren’s been inconsistent this year, and maybe we can catch him on an off night.
The Reality Check
Vegas has the Yankees as heavy favorites at -195, with us getting +162 as the home dogs. They’re also laying 1.5 runs on the run line. The over/under is 9, which seems about right – both teams can score some runs.
The numbers don’t lie – the Yankees win about 57% of games when favored, and we’re just 35.9% as underdogs this year. But hey, we’ve been playing better against the spread lately (7-3 in last 10), so maybe we can keep it close.
Offensive Matchup
Aaron Judge is having another monster year – .323 average, 41 homers, 95 RBIs. That’s MVP-level stuff, and we’ll have to pitch around him carefully. Ben Rice has been hot lately too, so their lineup has some pop.
For us, Lenyn Sosa continues to be our best hitter with 17 homers and 60 RBIs while hitting .270. Miguel Vargas and Andrew Benintendi need to step up if we’re going to have a chance. We need all hands on deck against this Yankees lineup.
Injury Concerns
Both teams are dealing with injuries. We’re still without Luis Robert Jr., which hurts, and we’ve got several pitchers on the shelf. The Yankees are missing Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt, so at least we’re not facing their ace.
White Sox Fan Hope
Look, we’re not kidding ourselves about what this season has been. At 48-85, we’re playing for pride and development at this point. But beating the Yankees at home would feel pretty damn good, especially with how they’ve dominated baseball over the years.
One prediction has us losing just 5-4, which honestly would feel like a moral victory at this point. We’ve been hitting the over lately (6 of last 10), so maybe we can make it a fun, high-scoring game.
The Bottom Line
We’re massive underdogs, but that’s nothing new this year. Sometimes the underdog bites back, and with Martin on the mound at home, we might surprise some people.
At the very least, let’s make Judge and company work for it. A competitive game against the Yankees would go a long way toward showing we’re not completely dead in the water.
Here’s hoping for a good crowd and maybe a little magic on the South Side.
