Where the Fire Stand
Saturday was messy and brilliant. NYCFC scored first through Hannes Wolf in the 19th minute. Dje D’Avilla then picked up a second yellow just before halftime and Chicago played the rest of the match a man down. Anton Salétros headed in the equalizer in the 55th minute, his first goal in MLS, and Maren Haile-Selassie won it in the 87th after a Matt Freese turnover. The Sun-Times called it a career-high goal total for him, alongside a career-best 10 assists.
Chris Brady made four saves. Robert Lewandowski added his third assist in MLS. The Fire are 9-4-1 at home, and a win tonight would make Gregg Berhalter the first coach since Bob Bradley in 2000 to win ten matches at Soldier Field in a season.
Who Is and Isn’t Available
- Out for Chicago: Anzor Mekvabishvili, Sam Rogers, Andre Franco and Robin Lod.
- Suspended: D’Avilla, because of the red card.
- Back: Mbekezeli Mbokazi had been ruled out for the season with a thigh injury, but recovered faster than expected and is back in the starting lineup, per the Union’s preview. Robert Turdean is back in training after international duty.
- Midfield: One report expects Mauricio Pineda to take D’Avilla’s spot. Leonardo Barroso’s place at left back is unresolved. Note that at least one match preview still lists D’Avilla in the starting XI, which cannot be right, so wait for the official lineup.
Losing D’Avilla hurts. He is a central midfielder, and whoever replaces him will be tested by the Union’s attacking talent.
The Union: Not Your Usual Philadelphia Team
Philadelphia started the year slowly and has been one of the league’s best teams since the World Cup break. During the unbeaten run they have outscored opponents 38-15. The latest result was a 2-1 home win over Real Salt Lake.
- Milan Iloski leads the team with 17 goals and six assists.
- Cavan Sullivan is 16 and has 20 goal contributions in MLS this year.
- Bruno Damiani scored against Salt Lake, and Bruno Píriz has nine goals.
- Andre Blake is still the captain and the goalkeeper.
The Union are led by interim head coach Ryan Richter, who called Chicago “probably the biggest test for this group since we’ve been coaching.” The Union have no injuries listed in the previews I found.
The Tactical Matchups
Chicago’s midfield vs. Philadelphia’s pace. With D’Avilla suspended, whoever sits in front of the back four will be asked to cover a lot of ground against Sullivan and Iloski. If the Fire’s fullbacks push high, Philadelphia will make them pay on the break.
Haile-Selassie and Zinckernagel vs. the Union back line. Haile-Selassie has 10 goals by one count and 24 shots on target, and Philip Zinckernagel has created 60 chances. Between them, they are the Fire’s main sources of service and goals.
Lewandowski’s movement. Defenders have to decide whether to follow him or hold their shape. That tends to open space for the players around him.
Brady vs. Iloski. Seventeen goals from 105 shots says Iloski will take chances from anywhere. Brady will need to be sharp.
Set pieces and discipline. Chicago just played a half with ten men and can’t afford another early card.
What Actually Decides It
The Fire are 9-4-1 at home and sit three spots higher in the East, but the Union’s form is hard to argue with. The market agrees this is open: both teams to score is priced at about two-thirds and the over 2.5 is priced the same.
The first 20 minutes should tell us a lot. If the Fire’s midfield reshuffle holds, they can be patient and use the crowd. If Philadelphia gets Sullivan running in behind early, we’ll be chasing. I like Chicago to take it, but I won’t pretend it’s comfortable.
Final Score Prediction: Chicago Fire 3, Philadelphia Union 2
