WITH THE NEW INSURANCE EXCHANGES COMING ON LINE
WHICH IS BEST? USE AN INSURANCE EXCHANGE FOR YOUR
HEALTH CARE NEEDS OR USE AN INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENT?

By Edwin L. Crammer CPA – Yes the Independent Insurance Agent is still here. But first let me do due diligence and state that I am married to an Independent Insurance Agent. This writing is not to be construed as an advertisement for her business.
On the outset, it would seem that using an exchange for your insurance needs would be the easy way to go. You dial up a specific telephone number and they give you a menu of insurance choices based on a set of guidelines fit certain criteria based on your age and other circumstances. You choose which one of the choices to use. Keep in mind, when following this route, you are not going to be dealing with an individual who is going to be looking out for you personally as an individual. The next time you call them, as with all government agencies you will get a different individual on the line.
An Independent Insurance agent will be there to give you service. To hold your hand through any confusion you may have in making the right choice, and believe me there is always confusion when it comes to choosing the right insurance policy for you.
In addition, if you have a problem with your insurance down the line, the company refuses to pay for a certain procedure or a doctor did not bill the insurance company, as well as many other potential problems too numerous to mention here, the exchanges are not going to help you. You will have to call the insurance company yourself and wait on the line, or get shuffled around through various departments, or get a run around when you try to make your case. An Independent insurance agent will do all that for you at no additional cost. You decide which is the best way to go.
