April 3, 2026 | Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH | 3:10 PM CT | Marquee Sports Network
The Chicago Cubs (hopefully 5-1 to start the season) travel to Cleveland to face the Guardians (85–77, AL Central champions last year) at Progressive Field tonight, and this is a good test on the road. They won their division last year. We went 78–84 and missed the playoffs. That seven-game gap is what we’re trying to close.
The Guardians have José Ramírez—one of the best players in baseball. Andrés Giménez is a Gold Glove defender at short. Triston McKenzie is a quality starter. They’re always well-coached, fundamentally sound, and competitive.
We have Tyler Glasnow on the mound. Jackson Merrill at shortstop. Pete Crow-Armstrong in center. If we’ve started 5-1 (hopefully), this is another chance to show we can win on the road against quality competition.
For Cubs fans, this is our first road test against a team that won their division last year.

The Matchups That Matter Tonight
| Position | Cubs | Guardians |
|---|---|---|
| Third Base | Matt Shaw | José Ramírez |
| Center Field | Pete Crow-Armstrong | Chase DeLauter |
| Starting Pitcher | Tyler Glasnow | Triston McKenzie |
Matt Shaw vs José Ramírez at Third
Shaw is our versatile prospect. Ramírez is a perennial MVP candidate and one of the best players alive. The gap is enormous, but Shaw can show he belongs.
Pete Crow-Armstrong vs Chase DeLauter in Center
PCA has elite defense and is showing offensive growth. DeLauter is an athletic prospect still developing. PCA should have the advantage.
Tyler Glasnow vs Triston McKenzie on the Mound
Both are quality starters. Glasnow has been dominant early in the season. McKenzie is a solid starter for a division winner. Should be a competitive pitching matchup.
What the Cubs Need on the Road
Tyler Glasnow Stays Dominant
Glasnow has been excellent through the first week. Against the AL Central champs on the road, keep it going. Six or seven quality innings would be huge.
Jackson Merrill Keeps His Strong Start Going
If he’s been solid through six games, keep building on the road against quality competition.
Pete Crow-Armstrong Continues His Growth
Has shown well early. Against the division champs on the road, keep proving you’re ready.
Win on the Road
The Guardians won the AL Central. We should be able to compete with them. Win on the road and show we’re for real.
What Cleveland Will Bring
José Ramírez will do something MVP-caliber—he always does. Andrés Giménez will make smooth defensive plays at short. Triston McKenzie will challenge our hitters with quality stuff at home.
The Guardians’ fundamental baseball and home field advantage will test us.
Cubs Fan Prediction: Competitive Game on the Road
Final Score: Cubs 5, Guardians 4
Tyler Glasnow is excellent on the road—seven innings, two runs, nine strikeouts. Continues his dominant start. Triston McKenzie shows his quality but gives up four runs.
Jackson Merrill goes 2-for-4 and keeps his strong start going. Pete Crow-Armstrong makes a highlight catch and drives in two. Matt Shaw adds a clutch hit.
José Ramírez goes 2-for-4 with a homer because he’s José Ramírez. But our depth and Glasnow’s dominance give us a one-run win on the road.
We’re 6-1. Best start in years. Showing we can win on the road against division winners.
Why This Road Game Matters
We’re (hopefully) 5-1 through six games. The Guardians won the AL Central last year. Win on the road and we’re 6-1—our best start in years.
Can Tyler Glasnow stay dominant? Will Jackson Merrill keep his strong start going? Can we win on the road against quality competition?
We went 78–84 last year. The Brewers won the Central at 86–76. Starting 6-1 with a road win against the AL Central champs would show we’re serious about 2026.
