The Chicago White Sox (63–99 last year) face the Los Angeles Angels (77–85) in spring training today, and this is actually kind of sad. They have Mike Trout—one of the greatest players of all time—and they’ve wasted his entire prime with terrible rosters and organizational incompetence. We lost 99 games and are in full rebuild mode.
At least we have a plan. The Angels keep spinning their wheels, wasting Trout’s Hall of Fame career while never building a competent team around him. They went 77–85 last year—better than us, but still eight games under .500 and going nowhere.
Reid Detmers is a solid left-handed starter. Drew Thorpe is trying to earn a rotation spot. Logan O’Hoppe is emerging as a quality catcher. Colson Montgomery is trying to become our franchise cornerstone.
For White Sox fans, this is just another spring evaluation. But watching Mike Trout in an Angels uniform is a reminder of what organizational failure looks like.
Where the White Sox Stand (Still Rebuilding)
2025 Record: 63–99
Ninety-nine losses. We’re terrible, and we know it. The rebuild is real, painful, and going to take years. But at least we have a direction.
Key Players:
- Luis Robert Jr. (CF): Elite talent when healthy—just needs to stay on the field
- Colson Montgomery (SS): Our top prospect, the entire rebuild depends on him
- Erick Fedde (SP): Veteran arm who mentors young pitchers
Top Prospects:
- Bryan Ramos (3B): Power bat trying to prove he’s ready
- Drew Thorpe (RHP): Gets another start, needs to keep showing progress
- Edgar Quero (C): Young catcher with offensive upside
Drew Thorpe gets another start. Against the Angels’ lineup, can he compete and show he’s ready for Opening Day?
The Los Angeles Angels: Wasting Mike Trout’s Career
2025 Record: 77–85
The Angels finished eight games under .500. They have Mike Trout—arguably the best player of his generation—and they’ve completely wasted his prime. It’s organizational malpractice at the highest level.
Key Players:
- Mike Trout (CF): Future Hall of Famer, one of the greatest ever, stuck on a mediocre team
- Logan O’Hoppe (C): Emerging catcher with offensive upside
- Reid Detmers (LHP): Left-handed starter with strikeout ability
Top Prospects:
- Nolan Schanuel (1B): First baseman trying to establish himself
- Kyren Paris (INF): Athletic infielder developing in the system
- Caden Dana (RHP): Pitching prospect with upside
The Angels are stuck in purgatory—not bad enough to fully rebuild, not good enough to compete, wasting Trout’s final productive years.
The Matchups That Matter Today
| Position | White Sox | Angels |
|---|---|---|
| Shortstop | Colson Montgomery | Kyren Paris |
| Center Field | Luis Robert Jr. | Mike Trout |
| Starting Pitcher | Drew Thorpe | Reid Detmers |
Colson Montgomery vs Kyren Paris at Shortstop
Both are young infielders with upside. Montgomery is more advanced and has higher offensive potential. Paris is athletic and versatile. Montgomery should have the edge.
Luis Robert Jr. vs Mike Trout in Center Field
When healthy, Robert has similar talent to Trout. But Trout actually stays on the field and has been elite for over a decade. That consistency and greatness is what separates legends from “what ifs.”
Drew Thorpe vs Reid Detmers on the Mound
Detmers is an established major league starter with strikeout stuff. Thorpe is a prospect trying to earn a rotation spot. Detmers should have the edge, but Thorpe needs to compete.
What the White Sox Need to See Today
Drew Thorpe Competes With Reid Detmers
Against a quality left-handed starter, Thorpe needs to show he belongs. Three or four innings with command and competitive stuff would be progress.
Colson Montgomery Keeps Progressing
Montgomery’s had a solid spring. Another quality performance today—good at-bats, smooth defense—keeps building toward Opening Day.
Luis Robert Jr. Stays Healthy
Just get through the game without injury. Spring training is winding down. Stay on the field.
Bryan Ramos Shows He’s Ready
Another chance to prove he deserves an Opening Day roster spot against major league pitching.
Compete With a Better Team
The Angels went 77–85. We went 63–99. They’re better, but not by a ton. If we compete today, that’s progress.
What Los Angeles Will Bring
Mike Trout will probably do something incredible because he’s Mike Trout. Reid Detmers will challenge our hitters with left-handed breaking stuff. Logan O’Hoppe might drive one.
The Angels’ veteran experience and Trout’s talent will test us. They’re not great, but they’re better than a 63-win team.
White Sox Fan Prediction: Close Game, We Fall Short
Final Score: Angels 6, White Sox 3
Reid Detmers throws five solid innings with strikeouts and quality stuff. Drew Thorpe battles but gives up four runs in four innings—respectable but not dominant.
Colson Montgomery goes 1-for-3 and continues showing he’s ready. Luis Robert Jr. crushes a solo homer (then exits as a precaution, naturally).
Mike Trout goes 2-for-4 with a double and reminds everyone why he’s one of the greatest ever. The Angels’ veteran experience and better roster pull away late.
We compete for a while. Then the talent gap shows. Three-run loss sounds about right.
Why This Game Matters (Kind Of)
The Angels are better than us—77 wins vs our 63. But they’re still mediocre and wasting Mike Trout’s prime. At least we have a rebuild plan.
Can Drew Thorpe compete with quality pitching? Will Colson Montgomery keep progressing? Can Luis Robert Jr. stay on the field?
Spring training is almost over. Opening Day is approaching. And we need our young core to show they’re ready for the long season ahead.
Go Sox!!!
